Cities of Vallinor map for Rhune Dawn of Twilight

This was created as a detailed regional map for the world of Rhune: Dawn of Twilight.

Fantasy map of the cities of Vallinor for the game setting of RhuneThis map raised an interesting challenge. It had to clearly depict a region that was already shown on the world map. However it would be tricky to do this in the same style as it would require a totally different set of symbols detailing individual locations. For this map – it’s all about the details – like roads, broken railway lines (this isn’t your standard fantasy setting), and all the different towns, villages and cities. This was why we decided to go for a maps that looked more like a classic 18th or 19th century map and less like an illustration of a world. This way I could fit in all the detail and not have it lost in the colour and shading. It also provided a clear break from the world map style that would set the regional maps apart.

I really like the feel of this map and the ease with which the features can be read off. This one is 1/3 the resolution of the final – but that version can be downloaded free over on the website for the setting. Both maps are currently gracing the front page 🙂

  1. Another great map in this series. The other StormPunk art I’ve seen so far looks good too and based on what content I’ve read I think it’s shaping up to be a solid product. When the book launches, I may pick one up just for the art alone – actually playing the campaign will be a bonus.

    1. Yep, he’s got some great illustrations in there. There’s a free character primer on the site which should give a very good preview of the world. And yes, there will be more maps in this series. No worries there 🙂

  2. I would love to get some tips on how you accomplished this or maybe even a tutorial if you’ve got one. I love the way you did everything, it’s so clean and easy to understand.

It looks like you have a small splat brush you used for the shading of everything. The line work, though, was that all by hand?

    1. Yes, the line work was all by hand. Many hours of it 🙂 All with a tablet, and a small hard round brush.
