It’s the first of the month, and that means a new Fantastic Maps map pack, in partnership with Kobold Quarterly! This month we go dark and dungeon-y with a Necromancer’s Lair. After showing off the city map tiles for Wayfinder #4 (previous post) it got me thinking. The square format is repetitive and blocky. Also, the directional lighting means the tiles can’t be rotated for variety without it looking like there are 4 different suns. So, whilst they are pretty, they have their drawbacks when trying to create a large map. I also feel that creating a whole city at this level of detail is a bit of a fools errand. That’s a lot of tiles to build a district, let alone a full city.
So I’ve been playing around, and because this is a personal project rather than a commission, I can make my mulling public. So here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

It’s the first of the month – which means a new map pack is out! This month it’s the Sand Dragon Inn, once again in collaboration with Kobold Quarterly and the guys at Open Design. The Inn sits in the baking desert heat, a rare oasis of luxury amid the sand. The thick walls and some simple enchantments keep the air cool and the wine and meats chilled. The D&D comic series continues to go from strength to strength, with the adventurers led by Adric Fell investigating the source of a mysterious plague. In this edition they find out that an artifact is at the root of events and chase it’s bearer as he flees from Fallcrest. It features fireballs, explosions, pick pocketing and Adric being hit in the head by a rock. Certainly worth getting a hold of.
As with the previous issue #1: Bad Day, this issue was also produced in a limited module edition that contains an adventure module written by Christopher Perkins. I did some maps for the first Dungeons and Dragons comic – Bad Day. IDW has released a second comic series – this one set in the classic Dark Sun world of Athas. It features the adventures of a gladiator who escapes from the fighting arenas. Here’s a sample (more after the jump):
In the last Kobold Courier, the kobolds of Open Design revealed the final Midgard logo, completing the set. So here it is in all it’s glory. As befits a world born of fire and ice, this one is bitterly cold.
This was designed for use in print at 2.5 inches wide. The smaller scale meant that the dragon’s head needed to be scaled up so it would still read well at small sizes. This also meant that the central letters needed to be nice and large.
Winter is coming. When you venture into the snowy north, where giants roam and mammoths stalk the icy plains, you’d best be prepared. The unwary perish in these treacherous snows.
The hall can be used for giants, or as the throne room of the barbarian king, perched on his mammoth-skull throne. A deep pit in the center of the room could be a sabretooth fighting pit, or just a convenient hole to throw unruly adventurers, before their fate is decided.
The Giant’s Meadhall is a map pack designed for use with a virtual tabletop, or to be printed out and used on the table at home.

Another Kobold Quarterly has hit the shelves – and with it another colour map. This one resides on the back cover and is the venue for a PC beer run. The complication is that the beer is already in a meadhall, and that meadhall is owned and occupied by giants. With bears.
The meadhall comes with a rickety bridge over an icy river, fire pits, a fighting pit, bear enclosure, mammoth skull throne and, of course, barrels of beer. Everything you could want for a memorable night of beer rustling.
